What I Do

I work with awarding organisations, education providers, training organisations and sector bodies across vocational, technical and apprenticeship education. Each piece of work is different, but the underlying commitment is the same: careful, experienced support that helps organisations improve with confidence.

Assessment Strategy and Improvement

Good assessment does not happen by accident. It takes clear thinking, consistent processes and the willingness to look honestly at what is not working.

I work with awarding organisations, providers and sector groups to review and strengthen assessment arrangements. That might mean examining your operating model from the ground up, or focusing on a specific area where confidence has slipped. Either way, the work is practical and grounded: identifying what needs to change, understanding why, and building a clear plan to address it.

This work can include:

  • Mapping and evaluating your end-to-end assessment operating model
  • Gap analysis of assessment policies and procedures against current standards and expectations
  • Independent review of validity, reliability, fairness and manageability across your qualification portfolio
  • Structured improvement planning with clear, prioritised recommendations
  • Risk profiling and mitigation advice ahead of regulatory or external review
  • Board and senior leadership advisory input on assessment governance frameworks

Qualification and Assessment Development

Qualifications only work when assessment is designed well from the start. Too often it feels like an afterthought, added once the content decisions have already been made.

I help organisations design, review and improve vocational and technical qualifications, assessment materials and the documentation that supports them. That might be a new qualification being developed from scratch, an existing award that needs updating, or assessment materials that have drifted from what the specification actually requires.

This work can include:

  • Full qualification review against awarding organisation, regulatory and sector requirements
  • Design and critique of assessment strategies, grading frameworks and sampling approaches
  • Line-by-line review of unit specifications, learning outcomes and assessment criteria
  • Development and quality checking of assessment tasks, briefs, mark schemes and examiner guidance
  • Technical writing and plain-language redrafting of qualification and assessment documentation
  • Employer and provider sense-checking to test manageability before finalisation

Apprenticeship Assessment Support

Apprenticeship assessment is one of the more technically demanding areas of the education and skills landscape.

The interaction between employer expectations, occupational standards and regulatory requirements leaves little room for vagueness. I offer specialist advice across the full apprenticeship assessment journey, from initial design through to operational readiness and quality assurance.

  • End-point assessment design, review and alignment with occupational standards
  • Detailed analysis of apprenticeship assessment plans and their practical implications for delivery
  • Grading design, including distinction criteria and cross-assessor consistency
  • Operational readiness checking ahead of delivery or external scrutiny
  • Review and strengthening of internal and external quality assurance frameworks
  • Tailored briefing and training sessions for assessors, verifiers and operations teams

Quality Assurance and Regulatory Readiness

Most organisations know, at least roughly, where their vulnerabilities are. The difficulty is finding the time and objectivity to address them before someone else finds them first.

I provide practical support to help education and skills organisations improve their confidence in quality, compliance and assessment decision-making. The starting point is usually an honest review of what you have in place.

This work can include:

  • Health check review of IQA and EQA systems, sampling strategies and recording practices
  • Assessment and qualification risk registers, with likelihood and impact ratings
  • Self-assessment support, including drafting and evidence mapping for regulatory submissions
  • Policy and procedure review against current regulatory frameworks and sector expectations
  • Standardisation, moderation and verification process design and review
  • Post-audit improvement planning, including preparation for reinspection or focused review

Land-based Education and Skills

The land-based sector has its own rhythms and its own relationship with education and training. Consultancy advice that ignores that context tends not to land well, however technically sound it might be.

I have spent a significant part of my career working in and around land-based education and qualifications, which means I understand the sector from the inside. That context shapes the advice I give.

  • Qualification and assessment review specifically within land-based and environmental sectors
  • Skills strategy development and vocational provision mapping for land-based organisations
  • Structured engagement with employers, levy-paying businesses and professional bodies
  • Curriculum audit and realignment to reflect current sector practice and workforce need
  • Advice on technical education pathways, T Levels and higher technical qualifications in land-based subjects
  • Consultancy and capacity support for colleges, independent providers, awarding bodies and sector skills groups

Vocational Curriculum and Provider Improvement

An experienced external perspective is often the thing organisations say they need and find hardest to access.

I work with colleges, training providers and education organisations to review and strengthen vocational curriculum, assessment and quality arrangements. I have worked at every level of the system, which means I understand what good looks like in different contexts.

  • Curriculum mapping and coherence review across programmes, levels and pathways
  • Quality improvement planning with measurable actions and clear accountability
  • Mock or preparatory review processes ahead of awarding organisation visits or Ofsted inspection
  • Assessment practice review and targeted staff development at team or individual level
  • Support for higher technical qualifications, T Level programmes and blended delivery models
  • Strategic advice on curriculum positioning, sector relevance and learner outcome improvement

Training, Facilitation and Technical Writing

I design and deliver training on assessment and quality assurance, facilitate sector and stakeholder groups, and produce technical documents that are both accurate and readable.

Understanding the requirements is one thing. Knowing what to do with them in practice is another. That gap is where a lot of organisations get stuck, and where well-targeted training or a well-written document can make a significant difference.

  • Bespoke training design and delivery on assessment practice, validity principles and quality assurance
  • Half-day and full-day workshops for assessors, IQAs, curriculum leads and middle managers
  • Structured facilitation of employer forums, sector working groups and stakeholder consultations
  • Authoring of guidance documents, operational handbooks and regulatory briefing papers
  • Technical writing and editing for qualification documentation, assessment materials and quality frameworks
  • Plain-language translation of complex policy, regulatory change or assessment reform for practitioner audiences

This is not an exhaustive list, and consultancy work rarely arrives in neat categories anyway. If you are working through something that feels relevant but does not quite map onto what you have read here, get in touch and tell me about it.
